Recover deleted ClickUp tasks: what the trash can't do
Deleted the wrong task, list or folder? Here's exactly what ClickUp's trash can recover, where it stops — and how a daily backup fills the gap.
What ClickUp's trash actually offers
ClickUp moves deleted tasks, lists and folders to a trash that keeps them for a limited period — around 30 days — before they're removed permanently. If you notice the mistake quickly and the item is sitting in the trash, recovery is a few clicks. That's the good news.
The limits matter more. The trash window is short. Not every kind of damage passes through the trash at all. And once the window closes, the items are gone — ClickUp cannot bring back what has been permanently deleted.
Damage that never reaches the trash
- Bulk edits — the multitask toolbar, an automation or an API call can rewrite statuses, assignees and custom-field values on hundreds of tasks. Nothing is "deleted", so nothing lands in the trash — but the data you had is gone.
- Bad CSV imports — columns mapped to the wrong fields overwrite clean values in place. Again: no deletion, no trash, no undo.
- Field and structure changes — delete a custom field or a status and its values vanish from every task that used it.
Recovery with a daily snapshot
With ClickUp Backup, every day is a complete, dated snapshot. To recover: open the snapshot from before the damage, find the task or list as it was — comments, attachments, custom fields intact — and download it. When records need to go back inside ClickUp, every plan includes recovery assistance: support walks you through re-creating them correctly, field by field.
It's the difference between "we think it's lost" and "we know exactly what was there — and we're putting it back today."
