ClickUp backup options: exports, a script, or a service

Option 1 — Manual exports

Cost: nothing. Risk: high. Exporting lists to CSV by hand is free and takes minutes. It also fails silently: exports age, context is missing, and the week nobody ran the export is the week something breaks. Useful as an extra copy; not a strategy.

Option 2 — A DIY script on the ClickUp API

Cost: "free" until it isn't. Risk: medium. ClickUp has a capable API, and a developer can script a daily pull of your workspace. Teams do it. The hidden bill arrives later: rate limits and pagination edge cases, API changes that break the script at 3 a.m., nobody watching for failed runs, and the day the script's author changes jobs. If you have an engineer maintaining it forever, it works. Most teams don't.

Option 3 — A dedicated backup service

Cost: from €19/month. Risk: low. ClickUp Backup does one thing: connect read-only via OAuth, snapshot the entire workspace daily, keep a dated history, and hand you downloadable archives plus recovery assistance when you need data back. Nothing to maintain, nothing to monitor, nothing to break.

If your workspace coordinates work worth thousands a month, the real question isn't whether €19 is affordable — it's what one lost sprint, one deleted folder or one overwritten client list would cost. The service pays for itself the first time anyone asks "where did that task go?"
